Summary

A trans teen walks the fine line between doing whatever it takes for his acting dream and staying true to himself in this moving, thought-provoking YA novel from the acclaimed author of Stay Gold

Aspiring actor August Greene just landed a coveted spot at the prestigious School of Performing Arts in New York。 There’s only one problem: His conservative parents won’t accept that he’s transgender。 And to stay with his aunt in the city, August must promise them he won’t transition。

August is convinced he can play the part his parents want while acting cool and confident in the company of his talented new friends。

But who is August when the lights go down? And where will he turn when the roles start hitting a little too close to home?

this book was another case where i didn’t like the authors first book but loved their second。 i loved this book! it was so easy to read。 i read pretty much the whole book in one day。 i loved reading about august’s journey。 i was genuinely interested the whole book。 i loved watching his growth。 august was such an easy character to cheer on。 i was so invested in his story and really wanted the best for him。 i found his journey with figuring out his role in the trans community really interesting。 w this book was another case where i didn’t like the authors first book but loved their second。 i loved this book! it was so easy to read。 i read pretty much the whole book in one day。 i loved reading about august’s journey。 i was genuinely interested the whole book。 i loved watching his growth。 august was such an easy character to cheer on。 i was so invested in his story and really wanted the best for him。 i found his journey with figuring out his role in the trans community really interesting。 we really saw how new he was to understanding himself。 watching that growth over the book was really interesting。 i also loved all the side characters。 this book was so so good!!! 。。。more

Look at how many of the homeless are LGBTQ youth。 Kids in these religious families are literally thrown away IRL。All things consider, the book does really good representation across the board, and that is incredibly valuable。 The book is definitely going to feel different to trans vs cis readers, the latter of which could learn quite a bit here。 It's not preachy or pedantic, but it's a good place to pick up some things, especially for readers in rural areas or that have limited access to the Internet or adult readers of YA books。Overall, I would definitely recommend, especially for readers interested in the theater。 I'm not a theater person at all, but I saw Tick Tick Boom a couple months ago and that helped with some of the technical stuff。 It probably isn't the next great LGBTQ read, but it certainly adds to the small body of existing lit。 。。。more

Przepiękna książka, opowiadająca o walce osób transpłciowych pochodzących z konserwstywnych rodzin i społeczności。 Mamy tutaj pokazaną siłę miłości i przyjaźni, walkę i odkrywanie własnej prawdy, samego siebie。 Kolejna poruszająca i dającą do myślenia lektura。

A feel-good story about a BOY named August Greene who runs away to live out his truth in New York City。As a nonbinary person, I was thrilled to see some positive trans rep in a new book! Act Cool is a wonderfully sweet story about being brave, finding yourself, chasing your dreams, and the performances it takes to find out who you truly are。 My only gripe against the book is its writing style and themes。 Everything is a little too good。 All of the problems resolve themselves a little too easily。 A feel-good story about a BOY named August Greene who runs away to live out his truth in New York City。As a nonbinary person, I was thrilled to see some positive trans rep in a new book! 4。5 stars - I thought I was done with YA contemporaries and yet, I always find one that pulls me back in and Act Cool definitely did that for me。 August was a great main character and I think he worked for me in exactly the way people did not like when reading some reviews。 August is flawed - he is fake, he lies and he is always putting on an act (both on stage and off stage)。 And he makes sure to tell you whenever he is doing so - but I loved that he was this somewhat unlikeable main character。 4。5 stars - I thought I was done with YA contemporaries and yet, I always find one that pulls me back in and Act Cool definitely did that for me。 August was a great main character and I think he worked for me in exactly the way people did not like when reading some reviews。 August is flawed - he is fake, he lies and he is always putting on an act (both on stage and off stage)。 And he makes sure to tell you whenever he is doing so - but I loved that he was this somewhat unlikeable main character。 This is my first McSmith book, but I really enjoyed how easy and real his writing felt to me。 I enjoyed watching August grow as a MC and come into his own identity。 I also felt as though this novel had the perfect balance between light, funny moments and really sad ones。 I do feel as though some of the plot points are told to readers in a quick fashion instead of shown, so the pacing felt a tad weak but other than that I thought this was really good! I am definitely surprised and delighted with this read。 。。。more

It's wonderful to have more transgender representation in books and especially by ownvoice authors。 That being said, the main character in this book was quite an unlikeable young man。 His fake personas grew annoying and the desperation to increase his following was pretty superficial。 I also didn't enjoy the writing as there was simply too much 'this happened and then that happened and then I did this'。 It is, however, an important story which is why I kept reading。 One where a young man is not It's wonderful to have more transgender representation in books and especially by ownvoice authors。 That being said, the main character in this book was quite an unlikeable young man。 His fake personas grew annoying and the desperation to increase his following was pretty superficial。 I also didn't enjoy the writing as there was simply too much 'this happened and then that happened and then I did this'。 It is, however, an important story which is why I kept reading。 One where a young man is not accepted by his parents as a boy and plans for conversion therapy are been hatched behind his back。 I did not feel drawn into the story until about the 90% mark where there were about 20 minutes of emotional and moving writing。 Overall, this was a miss for me and the content warnings need to be checked out。CW: (view spoiler)[transmisia, homomisia, dead naming, threats of conversion therapy, parents withdraw from teens life, suicidal thoughts/ideation, in one of the stage productions a transgender character commits suicide after receiving some conversion therapy, Mis-gendering, Coming out, Gender dysphoria (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

Czy można napisać historię o kimś, kto uczy się aktorstwa i jednocześnie połową jego dialogów nie są dialogi odgrywanej przez niego postaci? Jak widać można。 Naprawdę dobra
